On the 19th of December, on one of the regular Sunday Evolution trips up to Ronin Grappling, Steve Murray was awarded his purple belt by Giles Garcia. We’re immensely proud of him! Its a first for the club and we believe a first for the borders! Well done Steve a well earned and much deserved promotion!

Here’s a short note from Giles:

*********

After careful consideration I had the honour of promoting Steve to Purple Belt on 19th December 2021.

I first met Steve back in 2019, and even back then he was a real handful to roll with – I soon began to appreciate the experience he already had as a martial artist, not just as an MMA fighter but as someone who’s come from a traditional martial arts background, and chosen to objectively seek out the best methods of fighting. I immediately liked Steve, and a short while after having gotten to train with him, and see him work, I was glad to promote him to Blue belt on 28th February 2020.

Shortly after that, the pandemic reared its ugly head and all manner of hell broke loose.

During this time Steve endured intense personal difficulties, loss of the space the club used, and all the other woes that come with trying to keep a martial arts club alive during such trying times.

Throughout all this, Steve has exhibited all the greater qualities of a Martial artist; persistence, passion, wisdom, and empathy – his students love him, and have never been short of kind words for him when I’ve spoken with them – I draw inspiration from Steve, and I do not say that lightly.

Steve – you have my respect, my friendship, and I look forward to celebrating all of your future successes!
